It is warming up, with Christmas and New Year holidays just around the corner... This is the time of year when nature is at its fullest, the weather is warm and our calendars are bursting!
Did you know Chinese Medicine relates nature's seasons with our body's organs? During Summer, the focus is the Fire element and it's organs, the Heart and Small Intestine. The Fire element is reflected in nature with the warm summer sun and internally by the Heart which deals physically with supplying blood for all the organs to perform vigorous metabolic processes. Hence why, during Summer the heat often hits us and slows us down during the peak of the day.
Be revitalised and rejuvenated, find JOY in hot summer days and warm nights. It's time to rise earlier and sleep later, but to make the most of it without your energy being zapped... hydration is key!
TCM for Dermatitis/ Ezcema:
At this time of year when the air around us is warm and dry, our skin suffers and needs extra special attention. Skin may become dry, itchy and inflamed with red rashes which can blister and ooze. Most commonly these symptoms occur around the body flexures (ie. inside elbows and knees or in front of the neck), however they can occur on any part of the body and are just some characteristic symptoms of Dermatitis also known as Eczema.
Chinese Medicine is a whole-person approach and if you want support for Eczema, here are some reasons to consider trying TCM:
Conventional treatment uses moisturisers and steroid creams, in some cases antibiotics and antihistamines. Treatment generally will only treat symptoms and not resolve the cause, as such in many instances it will continue to flare up and over time will no longer be effective
Acupuncture is very safe and not likely to interfere with conventional treatments so it can be used complementary as part of a treatment plan
Depending on the severity, other supportive practices to manage skin lesions include;
Protection from changes in season and climate to prevent skin dryness
Wearing breathable and non-irritable clothing
Using moisturising agents
Bathing once or more each day, avoiding soaps
Dietary review, with elimination diets
A personalised herbal decoction, safe and steroid free

Summer Time: Heart & Small Intestine
Heart and Small Intestine imbalances play out in our lives through experiences such as fever, headache, irritability, insomnia, heartburn, poor memory, speech problems and confusion. Feeling irritated in the morning, can't sleep at night or just can’t seem to shake the heat then it's likely your Heart and Small Intestine are in need of some TLC.
In his seminal book, Healing with Whole Foods, Paul Pitchford tells us that Summer is a period of luxurious growth where the bounty of the outside world enters and enlivens us. We have condensed his suggestions into some simple food ideas below. Introduce three of these simple ideas into your daily food intake.
Our Pick: Foods for SUMMER
DRINK: first thing in the morning, juice 1/2 LEMON, mix with a cup of warm water, enjoy peppermint, camomile or green tea to disperse heat in the body
ADD CHIA seeds to drinks, breakfast and desserts, soaked for 7-8 hours with 10 times volume of water
WATER approx 2 litres provides good hydration. Increase if working physically hard.
MIX IT UP sweet & pungent flavours eg. peppermint tea with honey (aka mohito, non-alcoholic of course!)
EAT cooling foods: young plants, fresh greens, vegetables, fruits, sprouts, seaweed, brown rice, oats, protein such as fish and silicon foods such like cucumber, celery, lettuce to improve calcium metabolism and make you feel calm
ADD herbs like dill, basil, coriander
PLUS taking rose hips supplies vitamin C for soothing frayed nerves!
COOK faster and hotter eg. steam and stirfry, steam the outside and leave the insides slightly crunchy!
SNACK between meals on strawberries, mulberries and mandarins to astringe fluids to aid memory & concentration
AVOID too much rich food such as meat (proteins) and dairy that will make you feel heavy and sluggish
